Amazon’s Non-existent Tablet: Cheaper, Better, Faster than the iPad?

The rumor mill suggests that the Amazon tablet will launch sometime in September, but it’s probably more realistic to say, “Sometime this year, with the expectation that you will be able to buy it in time for Christmas.”

I’d like nothing more than to brand this the “iPad killer,” but something tells me that no tablet coming along right now will be capable of an action that extreme. Apple has a strange way of staying on top, regardless of the fact that their products aren’t always as exciting as the hype would have you believe. For instance, the iPad is heavy, it doesn’t play Flash, it doesn’t multi-task, it doesn’t play well with others, and I’d rather surf the web on my phone if that’s all it’s going to be good for! Still, if anyone can give them a run for their money (literally), I’d place my bets on Amazon.

They say that no one but Apple can make a decent sub-$500 tablet, but Amazon not only thinks they can undercut the iPad in price once… they think they can do it with two tablet at once. – via Amazon’s Android-Based Kindle Tablets Will Both Be Cheaper Than $499 iPad 2 | Cult of Mac.

That said, the Amazon tablet will be Android-based and may start at $349 for the 7-inch “Coyote” and $449 for the 10-inch “Hollywood.” It remains to be seen whether they’ll be able to ship with dual screens (there was yet another rumor that they would have both an LCD and eInk screen), but it seems rather unlikely to me. The technology to handle this might not quite be in play, so this may be something to look forward to in future versions. Let’s get to this version first, shall we? Has there ever been so much buzz about a product that doesn’t even exist? (That is, Amazon hasn’t officially said a word about it…but they have hinted. Oh yes, they’ve hinted….)
